ALS, 1837 April 14 : Washington, to Robert G. Rankin, Secretary of the Executive Committee of the American Lyceum, New York.

Declines an invitation to speak on public education, noting the rapid improvements leave him ill-suited "to discourse before an enlightened, and intelligent auditory, upon subjects which multitudes of my hearers would much better understand than myself ... my time has been consumed in devotion to concerns perhaps less important, but necessitated by the duties of public and domestic life ..."
